Parliament approves classifying details of donations, tax rebates as tax secrets

The Hungarian Parliament today approved a bill of amendment that would classify the details of donations and related tax rebates as tax secrets, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
Under the amendment, submitted to Parliament by Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga yesterday, the total amount of donations each taxpayer makes, as well as the total amount each beneficiary receives, cannot be classified as tax secrets; however, the details of each individual donation a taxpayer makes or each individual donation a beneficiary receives would be classified as tax secrets.
Online news portal index.hu noted earlier that this means that while the total amounts given or received would be known, the source of the donations would not. This detailed data “belongs to the private and business sectors,” according to the bill.
The law will take effect on the fifth day following its publication.
The amendment was approved by 138 voting in favor, with 31 voting against and no abstentions, in an expedited procedure submitted by Varga yesterday.
