Orbán travels to Brussels to discuss Brexit
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is traveling to Brussels today to take part in the first European Union negotiations on Brexit, to be held today and tomorrow, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
These will be the first official negotiations by members of the European Union since the United Kingdom’s referendum held on Thursday ended with the majority of British people voting to leave the bloc.
The first event on Orbánʼs agenda in Brussels is negotiations with the European People’s Party (EPP), of which Hungary’s governing party Fidesz is a member. Following the results of the referendum, the EPP issued a statement saying the “EPP remains wholeheartedly committed to the European project and to the process of further integration with the remaining 27 Member States”. EPP President Joseph Daul added “at the same time, we will defend the rights of EU citizens living in the U.K. and firmly oppose any attempts to interfere with the freedom of movement.”
This meeting will be followed by brief discussions between the Visegrad Four countries, MTI added. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó yesterday negotiated with his counterparts in the V4 countries, as well as with the German foreign minister in Prague.
The European Council’s meeting is scheduled to start at 4:00 pm today, with the participation of British Prime Minister David Cameron, MTI added. Following the results of the referendum, Cameron announced that he would resign from his position in October. Cameron’s resignation is considered a loss for Orbán who considers him an ally.
