Orbán: More funding for culture, science -- and a pool for every district

Upon attending the opening of a new 30,000-square meter natural science research center at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared Hungary to be “strong” enough currently so as to be able to expend more funds on cultural, intellectual and scientific pursuits.

The center was built, Orbán pointed out, thanks to an agreement between MTA and the government which guarantees increasing amounts of funding for cultural purposes; some HUF 9.5 billion was invested by the government in the center.

MTA director József Pálinkás promised that the new center would “ensure the highest-level conditions to over 500 researchers.”

“A swimming pool in every district”
The following day, in appearing at the grand opening of the new Water Polo Arena in SzolnokOrbán honed the message further. In a speech there, the PM stated that Hungary's recent successes in the area of sport and culture have come despite the financial crises plaguing Europe.

In advance of the 2021 FINA World Aquatics Championship competition, of which the rights to host were won by Budapest in July, Orbán declared that the government intended to ensure before then that each district in Hungary is to have at least one public pool facility for children.

Orbán stated that Hungarian citizens take the fourth-least exercise from within the 28 European Union member states.
