Orbán in Ukraine meet; tomorrow in Ireland with EPP
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is in Brussels today, taking part in the European Union extraordinary summit of heads of state held to discuss the crisis in Ukraine. European Council President Herman Van Rompuy stated upon announcing the meeting on Monday that “The EU heads of state … will discuss the latest developments in Ukraine and how to facilitate the necessary de-escalation of the situation.”
The leaders will also be presented with details of the €11 billion support plan for the beleaguered country which European Commission President José Manuel Barroso teased to media yesterday.
A press conference on results of the meeting is slated for 3pm today.
Thereafter, Orbán will head on to Dublin to address a European People’s Party (in which Hungary’s Fidesz MEPs are included), where the platform for upcoming European Parliamentary elections will be discussed and delegates will choose their nominee for the post of EC president. Up for nomination are former Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker and former Latvian PM Valdis Dombrovskis.
Speakers in Dublin will include Barroso, van Rompuy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In addition, representatives from the Ukraine have been invited to address the forum, including current Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Udar party president Vitaly Klitschko, and former premier/recently-freed political prisoner Yulia Tymoshenko.
