Opposition parties divided on selection method

Parliament

A bit of bad news for those looking to unseat Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz-KDNP government in the 2014 parliamentary election: Preliminary talks between opposition parties MSzP and Together 2014-Dialogue for Hungary (E14-PM) on forming a coalition for the election reportedly stalled on Friday evening.

Reuters reported that talks stalled when leaders of the two parties each proposed methods to choose joint candidates for the top of an E14-PM ticket. While E14 Co-Chairman Viktor Szigetvári assured that “There is no need for a suspension or breakup of talks ... and there is no intention of that on our side,” political analyst Péter Krekó of Hungary-based think tank Political Capital commented that “Anti-government voters can consider this opposition totally incompetent. How can these people govern the country if they are unable to make any compromise on the nomination?”

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.

We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
