Norway could return 860 refugees to Hungary

Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg said the country plans to send 860 asylum seekers to Hungary as it returns more than 4,000 refugees to the countries where they entered the EU, according to a report published by news portal thelocal.no on Monday.

The head of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) has estimated that of the 33,000 asylum seekers who arrived in Norway last year, as many as 5,000 could be returned to EU countries under the rules of the Dublin agreement, which states that asylum-seekers registered in the European Union can lawfully be sent back to the country from which they entered the EU. Although Norway is not a EU member state, it has the authority to employ the regulation, thelocal.no reported.
Pending the approval of their application, Norway is expected to return 860 asylum seekers to Hungary, including approximately 50 Syrians, thelocal.no added.
According to the news portal, the Norwegian Organization for Asylum (NOAS) has expressed its concerns for the safety of the asylum seekers, reportedly saying that Hungary has been deemed an unsafe country, thelocal.no said, citing a recent report from Austria.
