New defense chief: Military intervention should match risk

History

Newly appointed Defense Minister István Simicskó, who replaces Csaba Hende following his abrupt resignation yesterday, said at a press conference today that he supports the Hungarian governmentʼs refugee strategy of tighter border controls.

“We can speak of quotas, but first we must stop this new type of migration, because millions, tens of millions could flood Europe,” Simicskó was quoted as saying. He said he sees Europe as equally ill-prepared for the influx of refugees and added that each country needs to find their own solutions. The border fence can therefore “ensure the safety of the Hungarian people”, he said.

Simicskó was asked about the tougher border defense laws, which passed in Parliament on Friday and take effect on September 15, by a journalist who noted that these amendments might lead to escalated conflicts at the border. “You cannot fire a rocket in response to a slap in the face,” the new defense minister responded. In other words, according to index.huʼs interpretation, the extent of military intervention should match the risk.
