Népszabadság journalists to publish in homeless paper
Silenced journalists of the abruptly closed national daily newspaper Népszabadság will publish articles in the forthcoming issue of Hungary’s street paper Fedél Nélkül, Márton Gergely, former deputy editor of Népszabadság, told local commercial television station ATV on Saturday.
This Thursday, the usually 12-page Fedél Nélkül, which is written, edited and distributed by homeless people in Budapest, will be supplemented with another 12 pages carrying articles written by former journalists of Népszabadság. The excess costs of the expanded paper will be covered by those who came up with the idea, Hungarian online daily 444.hu reported, while revenue from sales will remain with the homeless people distributing the papers.
Fedél Nélkül is sold by homeless people on the streets, who are registered and certify their identity with a badge carrying their name and photo. The paper has no fixed price, but can be obtained in return for a donation from the purchaser.
Népszabadság journalists protest in Vienna
On Friday, a number of former journalists of Népszabadság organized a demonstration and an international press conference in Vienna, 444.hu reported. The location was chosen as Mediaworks, which recently bought and subsequently closed down the paper, is located in the city, along with the company’s owner Heinrich Pecina, the Hungarian daily added.
Journalists of the closed paper were reported to be pessimistic about the chances of the paper continuing, but would like to see the legal and financial situation of former staff clarified, the Hungarian portal added.
Members of the former Népszabadság editorial staff are also reported to have received many job offers, but have chosen solidarity instead, according to 444.hu.
