Ministry drafts anti-corruption bill
Hungary’s justice ministry today published a draft bill on its website aimed at amending several penal laws, which would in turn increase the efficiency of jurisdiction in corruption cases, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
The ministry said that “an extremely high” number of graft cases are not reported, so it has therefore drafted incentives such as more lenient punishment, or no punishment at all in bribery cases in the event that perpetrators are willing to cooperate with the authorities.
According to the ministry’s proposed changes, accepting tips or gifts for services would no longer constitute as bribery, however soliciting gifts would still be considered a criminal offense.
The draft also states that public officials who fail to report bribery would face prison sentences of up to three years. Repeat offenders will be handed a cumulative sentence, which may be stricter than those currently applied, the draft notes.
