Martonyi: Hungary set to transport gas into Ukraine
Hungary stands ready to transport gas into Ukraine and the technical means for doing so are at its disposal, Foreign Minister János Martonyi has stated. A statement from the Foreign Ministry released after a Thursday meeting between Martonyi and Ukraine Deputy Foreign Minister deputy Danylo Lubkivsky further reiterated that “Hungary firmly supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity.”
On Thursday, the ITAR-TASS Russian news agency reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had sent a communiqué addressed to leaders of countries which buy Russian natural gas. In the letter, Putin briefed the leaders about the critical situation that has developed due to Ukraine’s debt owed on natural gas and the grave consequences this may have regarding relations between the European Union and Russia.
Putin said on Wednesday after holding talks with members of the Russian government that Ukraine is in arrears to Russia for $16.6 billion, of which $2.24 billion is related to natural gas supply.
