Lázár says Orbán did not lie to Germany about number of refugees

History

Hungary’s Cabinet Chief János Lázár yesterday rejected allegations by German newspaper Bild, claiming that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán conned German leaders last September regarding the number of refugees waiting in Hungary on their way to Germany, according to Hungarian daily index.hu reported.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, the cabinet chief said that Bild’s allegations are ridiculous, as all of Europe knew what was happening at the Hungarian border, index.hu reported. “If this had been a surprise then Germany would have been working inefficiently, which is not likely”, Lázár reportedly said.

According to reports, in an article published earlier, Bild accused Orbán of misrepresenting the number of refugees Hungary would like to let through Germany, during his negotiations with German officials, who would ultimately have to accept the refugees.

Lázár said Orbán provided accurate information to German and Austrian officials, and also drew their attention to potential dangers, index.hu reported. “It is not the information from Hungary that was faulty, but welcoming [refugees] was a serious mistake,” Lázár was quoted as saying.
