Kovács: Sunday closures law needs to be scrutinized if issues exist
If there is “indeed” a loophole in the Sunday closures law, the legislation needs to be investigated and the law should be tightened, government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács said according to Hungarian news agency MTIʼs service Hungary Matters.
The spokespersonʼs comment came following the recent practice of declaring retailers as traditional outdoor markets in order to make them eligible to remain open on Sundays. The law forcing retailers to close on Sundays came into effect mid-March of this year.
It was reported earlier that Hungarian-owned CBA already has two stores near Lake Balaton that have been classified as traditional outdoor markets, while German-owned Lidl said in an official announcement that it will not take advantage of the opportunities offered by the loophole.
