Hungary declines to sign South Stream clarification query

History

Hungary did not sign a declaration devised by a handful of European Union member states asking the European Commission to clarify the situation involving the South Stream gas pipeline with Moscow, because the government did not issue a mandate to do so, the press office of the Prime Minister's Office told Hungarian news agency MTI yesterday.

The cabinet is scheduled to discuss the matter at a meeting on Wednesday, the press office said. The declaration was made by Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Romania and Slovenia.

Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, said on December 1 that the project to build the South Stream gas pipeline was dead, after President Vladimir Putin cited obstacles raised by the European Union. “The project is closed. This is it,” Miller was quoted as telling reporters.
