Hungarians indifferent to politics, OECD study finds

Following the low turnout at Hungary’s referendum on refugee quotas, which fell short of the threshold validating the plebiscite, a study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), entitled Society at a Glance 2016 and published on October 5, found that young Hungarians almost lead the way in terms of lack of interest in politics.

Among young people aged 15-29, the OECD report showed that Hungary ranked third from bottom, ahead of only the Czech Republic and Lithuania, in terms of indifference to politics.

In the age group of 15-29, almost 50% of Hungarians were reported to be uninterested in politics, while this figure was 36% for the total population, the OECD found based on data collected in 2012-2014.

Based on voting age population (VAP) turnout statistics, calculated by dividing the total vote by an estimated voting age population, turnout was at 63.36% in Hungary in 2014, the OECD statistics say. The referendum on October 2 saw an even lower turnout of less than 45%, according to reports.
