The Hungarian police have launched a Twitter channel to post information for Hungarians attending the European Championships in France, and will send a team of eight officers to operate the channel and serve and protect fans arriving at the event, according to an entry posted on police.hu today.

The team assigned to the job will update the Hungarian public with information and tips from the ground and allow those abroad to stay connected to the event, according to the official website of the Hungarian police.

The NFIP Hungary Twitter profile will broadcast tweets from the officers until the Hungarian national team completes the tournament.

The officers selected for the job have both extensive experience in maintaining order and handling criminals, as well as an in depth understanding of the European Championship, the Hungarian police said in the entry on its website. Officers who can skillfully maintain a dialogue with fans were prioritized during the selection process, it adds.

The officers will wear vests with the Hungarian national colors but will not carry service weapons. They will work closely with the French authorities and other special national police missions from countries such as Austria, Iceland, and Portugal.

The Hungarian police team will use the hashtag “# EURO2016” for their tweets, and will also continue to upload information on police.hu relevant to fans traveling to France for the event.

In an announcement issued today, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade urged Hungarians visiting France for the sports event to register with Consul Services before leaving the country. This way the service can provide help for Hungarians in France in an emergency situation, the press statement from the ministry says.

The Hungarian government has been cautious and has taken precautions related to the European Championships after press reports suggested the event could potentially be the scene of another terrorist attack. Intelligence agencies reportedly claimed that the event is secured.
