Having built fence, Orbán wants EU to pay for half of it
János Lázár, head of the Prime Ministerʼs Office, resumed his weekly press conference Thursday after the summer break. Among the first measures announced was a letter sent by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker requesting help with the costs of protecting Hungaryʼs southern borders.
In his letter, Orbán invoked "responsibility, solidarity and mutual assistance" in referring to the necessity of contributing to Hungaryʼs border defense costs, which have amounted so far to EUR 800 million, Lázár said.
"We have started protecting borders with deeds and not requests, and we rightfully count on the EU contribution to the expenses of protecting the EU borders," added Lázár.
The minister announced that based on the above, Orbán is asking the EU to contribute EUR 400 mln, which amounts to 50% of the spending of Hungary on border security, news portal index.hu reported.
Since Italy, Greece and Bulgaria have already received financial support for managing the refugee crisis, Hungary is also eligible for such funds, Lázár argued.
