A total of 185 information requests were made by the Hungarian government to social media network Facebook regarding 224 users during the first half of the year, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported this morning.

The figure more than doubled as compared to requests for information on about 78 users in the same period a year earlier, while in the second half of last year the government requested information on 167 users, Budapest Business Journal reported earlier this year.

In the first half of the year, Facebook gave out information on users to the Hungarian government in 36% of the cases, which they said only occurs for “well justified information requests”, origo.hu reported.

Origo.hu noted that the Hungarian government turned to the social media company with information requests 245 times to date. Governments around the world sent a total of 41,214 requests to Facebook in the first half of the year, 18% more than in the second half of last year, origo.hu reported.

In H1 2013, the Hungarian government requested information on 24 users and in H2 2013 requests by the government involved 51 users, according to earlier reports.
