Government wants Hungary to stay GMO-free
Hungary should retain its prohibition on the production of GMO crops in the country, Rural Development Ministry deputy state secretary Katalin Tóth said yesterday, despite GMO-seed producer Monsanto's expansion in Nagyigmánd.
Hungary has maintained its ban on GMO seed for years, going so far as to burn some 10,000 acres of maize grown with Monsanto seed in May of this year.
The European Commission announced on Wednesday that the Council of the European Union would consider a proposal to permit the production of DuPont-Pioneer 1507 GMO maize in EU member states after several previous such applications.
Tóth said that there are differing opinions among European Union member states regarding the necessity of maintaining the EU's ban on GMO crops, though a survey of European Union citizens indicated that 70% of them opposed production of such crops within the union.
