Government to discuss road toll changes on Wednesday
The Hungarian government is scheduled to discuss the planned changes to the road toll system on Wednesday, government spokesperson Éva Kurucz announced today, adding that county stickers for roadways have been a topic for years and impact studies on the issue would be made available soon.
The introduction of the county sticker system will make local motorway usage more affordable and transit traffic more expensive, said the spokesperson.
Asked if consultations had been carried out by the government prior to the announcement of the coming changes, Kurucz replied that the consultation process is continuous, and on the weekend they had talks with transport companies and today municipalities are being contacted.
The Development Ministry announced last Wednesday that county stickers and a fee would be introduced from January 1, for currently free ring roads which circumvented cities. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he is backing the new system and added that it is beneficial for Hungarian citizens.
