US-Japan team plans new nuclear reactor in Wales
A US-Japanese consortium is working on a plan to build a new nuclear reactor in Wales, that would not involve Britain’s biggest nuclear power firm, British Energy, the Times newspaper said on Monday.
The paper, without citing sources, said US nuclear services group EnergySolutions had teamed up with Japanese-owned nuclear technology firm Toshiba-Westinghouse, to possibly build a new nuclear reactor at Wylfa on Anglesey. They have held talks with several European and British utilities about forming a separate new consortium to the one involving British Energy, it said. Germany’s RWE and Britain’s Centrica have submitted proposals to buy British Energy and Electricite de France is also considering a bid, sources close to the matter have told Reuters. The proposed site at Wylfa is next to an existing nuclear reactor that is to be retired from service in 2010 and lies on land owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, the Times said. None of the companies mentioned could immediately be reached for comment. (Reuters)
