Orbán voices support for UEFA stand against 'Super League'

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán welcomes the stand the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has taken against efforts to establish a "Super League", the PM's press chief told state news wire MTI on Monday.
"It is Hungary's conviction that the beauty and sublimity of the world's most popular game is a result of the fact that the sport belongs to everybody and cannot be expropriated by the richest," Orbán said.
"Hungary supports UEFA, FIFA, and the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) in the interest of protecting the integrity of federation competition at the national or the European level," he added.
UEFA said on Sunday it learned that a few English, Spanish and Italian clubs "may be planning to announce their creation of a closed, so-called Super League".
"UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations...will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever," UEFA said.
"We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way," it added.
On Monday, AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF, and Tottenham Hotspur announced an agreement to form a new competition, the Super League, governed by their founding clubs.
