Bulgaria's gov't debt of 25.1% of GDP in 2021

Bulgaria's general government sector reported a deficit of EUR 2.8 billion, or 4.1% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), public broadcasting BNR reported citing preliminary data from the statistics institute.

The deficit in central government amounted to EUR 3.3 billion, while local government reported a surplus to the tune of EUR 75 million.

The 'Social Security Funds' generated a surplus to the tune of EUR 414 million.

Meanwhile, the government debt reached EUR 17 billion in 2021, or 25.1% of the GDP - a record high since the introduction of the currency board in 1997.
