United States Ambassador to Hungary Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis called talks with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in parliament on Tuesday "very warm and productive".

The US embassy said in a statement after the 90-minute meeting they had discussed "a wide range of issues in our bilateral relationship, including our cooperation in the NATO led missions in Afghanistan and the Balkans."

It noted that the ambassador had thanked Orbán for Hungary's "extraordinary service as our protecting power in Libya."

Kounalakis discussed with the prime minister how the US embassy and American companies might help Hungary in its efforts to restructure the economy, including support for the development of entrepreneurship and small and medium sized enterprises.

The statement also noted concerns mentioned by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to Budapest in June.

"These issues were raised as a friend with the understanding that Hungary is a democracy with an elected government that has been given a rare two-thirds mandate by the people of Hungary," the statement said.

"With this unique opportunity and rapid pace of change, the United States has a strong interest in seeing Hungary succeed and emerge an even stronger ally. Our relationship is based upon our shared values, common interests and mutual respect," it concluded.
