If NATO is to help improve the security of the region it must expand its borders by completing the accession of Montenegro and opening the door to Macedonia and Georgia, Hungaryʼs Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó told the press during a security conference in Budapest Wednesday, Reuters reported.

During the Centre for Euro-Atlantic Integration and Democracy (CEID) conference, the minister said that security concerns in Europe need to be addressed, concerns that are being exacerbated by mass migration, Hungarian news agency MTI reported. The only way to heal the wound, however, is at the source, as such the international community needs to band together to help resolve the conflict in Syria, Szijjártó reportedly said.
NATO also plays a vital role in the regionʼs security through the expansion of its borders, the minister added. “If NATO does not continue the enlargement process that would also erode NATO’s credibility significantly,” Szijjártó told the press at the conference, according to Reuters.
