Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been ranked first among the “28 people from 28 countries who are shaping, shaking and stirring Europe”, according to a list compiled by political online daily politico.eu.

Editors of the daily chose one person from each European Union member state, and after that they ranked each politician. Orbán “the conservative subversive”, as the daily calls him, was chosen to top the list given that “Orbán shapes as much as fits the European zeitgeist”. Politico says that his approach to the flow of refugees into the EU “shifted the debate from how to accommodate” to “how to stop it”.

“Viktor Orbán is impossible to ignore, no easy feat for a leader of a Mitteleuropean state of ten million souls with scarcely any natural resources. Love him or hate him — and most people do one or the other — you have to pay heed to him. Indifference is not an option,” Politico writes about the prime minister.

Orbánʼs system is compared to Putinism and Erdoğanism by the daily. “His variety is, to be sure, diluted: Not bluntly authoritarian, broadly in line with EU norms. Still, his government has kneecapped NGOs, independent media and the judiciary in ways that Putin and Erdoğan would admire,” Politico says.
