Japanese minister in Hungary on nuclear-themed tour

Visits

In Hungary for a few days is Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, who’s loaded with a busy schedule of nuclear power-related visits throughout a six-day tour of the region. The Japanese delegation stated mission in Hungary is “to promote Japanese firms’ nuclear technologies to help [increase] such exports to the European nation.”

First up today was a meeting with Hungary’s own Foreign Minister János Martonyi to make official the agreed-upon social security arrangement for Japanese citizens. It is speculated that cooperation efforts in the energy sector, namely the upcoming upgrade of the Paks nuclear power plant, and a proposed national security seminar between Japan and the Visegrád Four nations (Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia) slated for February in Tokyo will be discussed.

This evening, Kishida will meet with Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orbán to formalize Orbán’s plans to visit Japan in November. Hungarian officials had stated that Kishida would then visit the Suzuki facility in Esztergom before going on to Visegrád to visit the castle and palace there.

After leaving Hungary, Kishida heads for Ukraine; after touring the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site, he’s scheduled to meet with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara. Topics on the table will be continued cooperation on nuclear accident control and “Japan’s concern over growing weapons exports from Ukraine to China.”

According to Hungarian Investment and Trade Agency (HITA) statistics, 119 Japan-based enterprises have contributed up to €3 billion in FDI in Hungary.
