Hungary is planning to establish a national utility provider, which would be a state-run and non-profit utility holding company, Cabinet Chief János Lázár told reporters in Makó, southern Hungary, yesterday. According to reports, Lázár said the holding company would be ready to launch at the end of March 2015.

The new provider would be built around Budapest's gas provider Főgáz, which is currently state-owned, and would begin its operations by distributing electrical power, gas, and heating, while later it would also handle water supply, sewage, and garbage collection, the cabinet chief added.

Lázár said the company would offer high-level services at competitive prices and win over households from competing electricity, gas or district heating providers. The government, however, will not employ administrative tactics to force competitors out of the market, Lázar said.

State secretary Zsuzsanna Németh would be responsible for coordinating the establishment of the new holding company.
