President Novák expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquake and the Turkish people in a letter to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Sándor Palace said. She also pledged Hungary's immediate assistance in the rescue operation.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also offered his condolences to President Erdogan and the people of Türkiye. "We are praying for the families of the victims. I have instructed the Hungarian authorities to provide immediate assistance to Türkiye," he said.

Assistance for Türkiye was at the top of the agenda of a three-day strategic cabinet meeting that started on the outskirts of Sopron on Monday, the PM's press chief told MTI. Hungary's government is making contact with Turkish authorities regarding assistance it can offer, Bertalan Havasi said.

The strategic cabinet meeting will also discuss protecting Hungary from high inflation, high energy prices, and other negative consequences of Brussels' sanctions policy, he added.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said Hungary has offered to send an experienced, 50-member search and rescue team to Turkiye. The team is prepared to leave immediately if local authorities signal they are needed, he added.
