Szijjártó: Hungary would consider fences on every border
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó proposed today that, if necessary, the government will build fences along every one of the countryʼs borders to stop illegal immigration, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
Szijjártó noted that the government will provide HUF 6.5 bln to build the 175-km long fence along the Serbian border. According to the controversial plan, Hungary intends to build the fence without any foreign assistance, and will enlist the help of the Hungarian Defense Force and the Hungarian police.
The minister claimed that 61,000 illegal immigrants arrived in Hungary this year with 60,922 of these coming through the Hungarian-Serbian border. “This number causes serious technical and capacity problems in Hungary,” Szijjártó said.
According to Szijjártó, Hungarian-Serbian relations and cooperation have never been as good as now, and he promised that next week the issue would be discussed during the Hungarian-Serbian governmental conference.
The facts, however, seem to contradict the words of the Hungarian foreign minister. Last week, Serbiaʼs Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that “Serbia will not follow the Hungarian example; it will not build walls and will not live in Auschwitz,” online daily origo.hu reported.
