Hungary is launching an independent mission to Kabul to evacuate its citizens from Afghanistan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade state secretary Levente Magyar said on Wednesday.

Magyar said the Hungarian nationals in Afghanistan of which the government is aware could be comfortably accommodated in a single aircraft and 26 would soon be brought back to Europe.

He said the state of Hungary also wants to help the "several hundred" Afghans and their families who assisted Hungarians there through work such as interpreting. "Those people's lives are in genuine danger, rescuing them is our moral responsibility," he added.

Magyar said Hungary's participation in a general resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees is "out of the question".
