Áder: Early ratification of climate deal ensures Hungaryʼs seat in negotiations
Hungaryʼs early ratification of the Paris Agreement on global action to avoid dangerous climate change ensures the country a place at the negotiating table when rules for the dealʼs implementation are drafted, President János Áder said yesterday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
Giving an interview to Hungarian state-owned all-news channel M1 yesterday, Áder (pictured) said lawmakers ratified the Paris Agreement with a unanimous vote in Parliament on Tuesday, making Hungary the first European Union member state to officially back the deal, MTI reported.
Hungary is in a good negotiating position as it is one of just 21 countries around the world whose economies grew while their emissions of greenhouse gases fell – because of improved energy efficiency, Áder said.
The Hungarian Parliament yesteday voted formally on backing the Paris agreementthat Áder signed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in April. The agreement, which was signed by the leaders of 171 countries, including 60 heads of state and government, will take effect once 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emissions of gases responsible for global warming have ratified it, MTI noted.
