Hungary responds to EU infringement procedures

Hungary's government has sent its reply to the European Commission addressing infringement procedures launched a month earlier, the Prime Minister's Office said on Friday.

The answer was sent on Friday, the deadline, the office said. 

The three accelerated infringement proceedings against Hungary by the Commission concern the independence of its central bank and data protection authorities as well as measures affecting the judiciary, including the lowering of the mandatory retirement age for judges, prosecutors and public notaries from 70 years to the general pensionable age (62 years) as of January 1st, 2012. 

The office also said the reply addressed two further questions brought up the Commission: the operation of Hungary's justice system and the situation of the media. 

"The government is committed to European values and continues to stand ready for consultation with any of the European Union's institutions," the statement said.
