Hungary has joint lowest ratio of women in science, engineering

Hungary has the joint lowest ratio of women to men in science and engineering in the European Union, according to a survey by the EU’s official statistical agency Eurostat.

A mere 25% of those who work in science and engineering were women in Hungary in 2017, the year from which the data are taken. The only other country with a 25% ratio was Luxembourg. The two other countries with a ratio below one-third were Finland (29%), and Germany (33%).

The EU average ratio amounted to 41%, with Lithuania topping the list with a ratio of 57%, followed by Bulgaria and Latvia (both 53%), and Portugal (51%).

In 2017, almost 18 million people worked in science and engineering in the EU, Eurostat says.
