HungaroControl launches Free Route airspace
HungaroControl yesterday announced it became the first air traffic controller in Europe to abolish all fixed routes and allow aircraft to choose the most efficient path across the country. According to HungaroControl, the introduction of Hungarian Free Route Airspace (HUFRA) is expected to save carriers about $3 mln in fuel costs a year and will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 16,000 tons.
The system is expected to optimize navigation capacities, making air traffic controllers' work easier and increase safety. All European Union member states must adopt the free route system by the start of 2022 under a European Commission directive. Although several other countries have introduced the Free Route concept, airlines may only use it in those countries with time and space limitations, HungaroControl said.
