Hungarian customs guards excel - official

EU

Hungary’s customs authority is the most efficient among the new EU member states and among the five most efficient of the EU-27 when it comes to cracking down on pirated goods, EU Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union László Kovács said.

As to volume of confiscations, Hungary, which has non-EU borders as well, is only preceded by France, Germany and the Netherlands, he emphasized. Last year there were over 79 million pirated goods seized in 43,671 raids in the EU, as against the 128 million and 37,000, respectively in 2006. The discrepancy can be explained by the increasing number of Internet orders and by smugglers tending to deal in small quantities, which impose lower risk, he said. As a result of the cooperation between the EU and China, the ratio of fake goods coming from China dropped from 80% to 60%. (Gazdasági Rádió)
