European Commission urges Hungary to comply with extractive mining waste rules
The European Commission on Thursday said it asked Hungary to bring its national legislation on extractive mining waste in line with European norms.
Hungary has transposed many provisions in the EU's extractive mining waste directive into national law, but the Commission identified several shortcomings in a letter of formal notice sent to Hungary in March 2010.
The Commission said most of these had been resolved by "crucial shortcomings" remain regarding the definitions of 'treatment' and 'extractive industries', limiting the directive's scope of application and hindering its full implementation.
The request by the Commission is in the form of a reasoned opinion. If Hungary fails to comply within two months, the Commission may refer the case to the EU Court of Justice.
