EcoMin state secretary says gov’t striving to reach agreement with EC
Hungary’s government is attempting to reach an agreement as soon as possible with the European Commission (EC) regarding the new laws to which the commission objects, National Economy Ministry State Secretary Zoltan Csefalvay said at the Euromoney financial conference in Vienna on Wednesday.
Mr Csefalvay said if the points named by the EC contravene the European Treaty, the Hungary’s government and parliament will change them.
In response to a question, Mr Csefalvay said that it is in the fundamental interest of Hungarian citizens that the National Bank of Hungary be independent and able to perform its duty, the maintenance of price stability.
European Commission announced on Tuesday it decided to start expedited infringement procedures against Hungary over stipulations in new laws concerning the independence of the central bank, the mandatory retirement age for judges and data protection.
