EC still evaluating Hungarian RRF plan, says spokesperson

EU

The European Commission has not yet completed its evaluation of Hungary's Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF) plan, the commission will ask the Hungarian authorities for an extension of the evaluation deadline, EC spokesperson Arianna Podesta said on Monday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

The process is ongoing, Hungarian authorities have been notified of the delay in the evaluation of the RRF plan. The EC is currently examining answers it has received on Friday to its earlier questions, she added.

"The evaluation of the Hungarian recovery plan may take weeks rather than days, so the European Commission will propose to the Hungarian authorities to agree to an extended deadline of two months," she said.

The Hungarian Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Monday that there are continuous negotiations between Hungary and the European Commission on the adoption of the Hungarian recovery plan.

Talks were nearing completion, however following the adoption of the child protection act "the EC presented absurd claims", the office said, adding that "ideologically driven political attacks are clearly slowing down the adoption of the plan, which was developed earlier during professional negotiations."

The ministry expressed its hopes that the plan to support the relaunch and competitiveness of the Hungarian economy will be assessed on a professional and non-political basis.

"There is no real reason for any EU organization to reject the Hungarian recovery plan. We have responded to the EC's sudden new demands. Hungary has already fulfilled all the conditions that members have to meet under the EU RRF decree," the statement said.

Hungary's RRF plan, which the country submitted to Brussels in mid-May, contains more than HUF 2.5 tln of strategic development projects to be implemented over the coming six years. The initial deadline for the EC to approve the plan was on Monday.

The EC has approved the RRF plans of 16 member states so far and five member states have asked for a deadline to the evaluation process of their plans.
