Fidesz submits penal code amendment to punish media libel
The governing Fidesz party has submitted a bill that would introduce prison sentences for those preparing forged audio and video recordings with the malicious intent of libel. The amendment would also levy prison terms on those publishing such recordings.
The move appears to be in direct response to a recently-released video portraying the preparation of fraud by Fidesz in the September by-election in Baja was released. The video turned out to be a fake and led to the resignation of Hvg.hu editor-in-chief Gábor Gavra after his site published the recording under the title “proof of election fraud.”
