Fidesz proposal: Reduce or scrap utility bill base fees
MPs of the governing Fidesz party will propose that the government consider significantly reducing or scrapping base fees in utility bills, parliamentary group leader Antal Rogán said at a press conference yesterday. Rogán said scrapping base fees could save households an annual HUF 2,000 to HUF 3,000 on their electricity bills, HUF 10,000 to HUF 15,000 on their gas bills and HUF 57,000 to HUF 84,000 on their district heating bills.
Fidesz wants consumers to be relieved of the cost of changing meters, and it wants meters to be synchronized with billing, Rogan said, noting that the cost of replacing a meter could reach as much as HUF 115,000.
The MPs also want a review of connection and activation fees as well as contributions to developments, he added. Weighing the issues could save households up to HUF 100,000 a year, he said. The MPs have asked the government to deal with the matters at the next cabinet meeting, he added. The Fidesz-KDNP coalition parliamentary majority-led coalition last year cut gas, electricity and district heating prices by a combined and has announced another round of reductions for this year.
The cabinet is slated to discuss transformation of Hungary’s utility companies into non-profits at a cabinet meeting tomorrow.
