Fidesz leader: Free withdrawals “a right”
Parliamentary party leader Antal Rogán pushed forward the Fidesz proposal calling for a constitutional amendment that guarantees customers of Hungary-based banks to receive two free withdrawals a month on Saturday, firing back hard at the Hungarian Banking Association (MBSz).
An MBSz statement of Friday defended banks’ rights to recoup losses from the recently-introduced financial transaction fee by passing costs on to customers and that a free-withdrawal law would only boost the “gray economy.”
In reply, Rogán emphatically stated that the governing Fidesz-KDNP coalition would not allow banks to “get filthy rich” by “seducing” Hungarian families with unfair savings plans. “Making two monthly withdrawals free of charge up to the average income level is a consumer’s right,” Rogán declared.
Rogán also said that Fidesz MPs would certainly turn the draft legislation into law and could pass further legislation making bank card purchases free of charge as well.
Last week in introducing the draft legislation, Rogán explained that the number of transactions to be made free of charge was upped from one to two due to the fact that essentially all the banks raised handling fees in response to the government’s introduction of the financial transaction tax.
