Fidesz drops plan to post government agents in newsrooms

History

Ruling Fidesz MP Imre Vas issued a modification to a bill, proposed by Interior Minister Sándor Pintér, that could have allowed the state to station intelligence agents in newsrooms, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported today.

Although the Hungarian government denied it was planning to send security agents to newsrooms, Fidesz acknowledged that the passage that suggested this could be done was “legally obscure”. Therefore, the party said, that clause will be deleted from the proposed bill, origo.hu reported.

Citing information it had gathered, origo.hu said that Fidesz chose to drop this part of the bill as the party wanted to prevent the kind of grassroots demonstrations that brought tens of thousands out into the street when an internet tax was proposed last year.
