EU-28, Hungary on track for 2020 renewable energy goal

EU

European Union statistics office Eurostat this week released a report on the use of renewable energy sources in member states with an eye toward the European Commission’s 2020 Climate and Energy Package. The news appears mostly positive, with the great majority of EU-28 countries – including Hungary – on track to reach the set goals.

The overall use rate of renewable energy represented 14.1% of the EU’s consumption in 2012.
Three countries – Sweden, Estonia and Bulgaria – increased renewable-energy use enough in ’12 to have already reached their 2020 goals of 49%, 25% and 16%, respectively. Estonia actually met its mark in 2011, thereby becoming the first success story of the green plan.

Hungary’s own use of renewable energy sources has seen a steady increase since 2010 of right about 0.5% per year, from 8.6% to 9.1% to 9.6% in 2012. A continued increase at this rate would have the country meeting its goal for ’20 at essentially exactly the appropriate time.

On the other hand, Hungary is graced with one of the lowest benchmarks to reach, a 13% proportion. As of the end of 2012, only seven EU member states – Ireland (7.2%), Cyprus (6.8%), Belgium (6.8%), Netherlands (4.5%), the UK (4.2%), Luxembourg (3.1%) and Malta (1.4%) – got less energy from renewable sources than Hungary.
