EC could enter a "new phase" on some infringement procedure matters
The European Commission could enter "a new phase" on one or two matters in infringement procedures it launched recently against Hungary, spokesman for the prime minister Péter Szijjártó said in an interview on public radio early Monday.
Szijjártó said the Hungarian government is of the view that a part of the infringement procedures could be wound up immediately. "In one or two matters, it's conceivable that the Commission will enter a new phase with the procedure, as we can't reach an agreement or they don't accept our arguments," he added.
Asked whether the matters could come before the European Court, Szijjártó said it was still too earlier in the process to "think that far ahead".
The Commission launched the accelerated infringement procedures against Hungary in mid-January on concerns over the country's new Central Bank Act, the mandatory retirement age for judges and the data protection authority.
The government sent a response to the Commission addressing the issues on the deadline for replying, on February 17. The Commission is expected to take a stand on the response as soon as this week.
