Left wing tug-of-war continues
The socialist MSzP will continue negotiations with Gordon Bajnai’s Együtt 2014-PM (E14-PM) organization but is also open to starting talks with other opposition sides, the party’s management decided late Wednesday.
MSzP chairman Attila Mesterházy said he has been authorized to discuss all possible scenarios with Bajnai that could facilitate a unified opposition. After lengthy negotiations and bickering, the two sides apparently reached a provisional agreement on how they would distribute the number of constituencies for the next general elections among themselves. However, there is no resolution on who will become the opposition candidate for prime minister.
The talks are to continue Friday, Mesterházy said.
Latest polls of likely voters show Fidesz drawing 24%, while MSzP and E14-PM could only muster 19% combined. Approximately 46% of the electorate is undecided.
