Left-wing joy over local by-election victory

Sándor Ladányi, the joint candidate of the left-wing MSzP, Together 2014-Dialogue for Hungary (E14-PM) and Democratic Coalition (DK) parties, claimed a commanding victory in the Szigetszentmiklós by-election over the weekend. Ladányi took 52.6% of the votes whereas his strongest contender, Mrs.Tamás Keller representing the Fidesz party, only raised 29.4%.

Independent candidate István Horváth finished with 9.4% of the vote, while Jobbik candidate Zsolt Károly Horváth and LMP's Anna Bagoly-Pádár each garnered about 3.9%.

All involved opposition parties released statements highlighting that the cooperation of the democratic left wing is indeed the solution to overcoming Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz at the 2014 general elections.

By-elections are often misleading and non-representative, especially since the vote was conducted with a muted turnout of 30.94%; just 680 ballots were cast.
