Hungarian government to spend ad tax revenue on upgrading schools

History

Cabinet chief János Lázár said on Wednesday that the government was seriously considering to accept the advertisement tax bill proposed by Fidesz lawmaker Lászlo L. Simon, and to spend its revenue on upgrading and modernizing schools. Lázár added that, this way, multinational media companies would be able to contribute to the alleviating of the public burden to a greater extent

"Over the past twenty years there wasn't enough political courage, but the government will now take Simon's proposal seriously and weigh it up," Lázár said. The cabinet chef also added that the bill would be discussed in the summer, standing by L. Simon's statement made a day earlier.

He said that the media roar is similar to the dissatisfaction of banks when the government introduced banking tax last year. Lázár sees “nothing odd in” the media’s reaction of jointly protesting against the government. Rejecting the idea of violating the freedom of press he said that “the fact that taxes have to be paid does not mean that democracy is not here to stay in Hungary.”

He admitted that with the possible introduction of the bill the government has decided to walk on shaky grounds as “the success of [politicians’] work often depends on their appearances in the media”. He also commented on that at certain forums media “is trying to exert pressure on the government”.
