Thermal water reinjection exemption set to boost greenhouse output

Parliament

A government decision exempting farmers from mandatory reinjection of thermal water used to heat greenhouses could boost output of the sector, Béla Mártonffy, who heads professional association FruitVeB, told MTI on Tuesday. With the requirement scrapped, greenhouse farmers' fruit and vegetable output could rise to an annual 600,000 tonnes from 350,000 to 400,000 at present, Mártonffy said. The increase would make the country the third-biggest greenhouse producer in Europe, after Spain and the Netherlands, he added. The 2,500-2,600 hectares of greenhouse space in Hungary could grow by 1,000 hectares by 2020, he said.
