Orbán: One stadium closer to the world
After Pancho Arena Felcsút, the stadium of Debrecen worth HUF 11.5 billion bearing 20.000 spectators was inaugurated. The stadium is hosting the first international friendly match of Hungary versus Denmark on 22 May.
Citizens of Debrecen agree that the new stadium is well-deserved for the city. Mayor of Debrecen Lajos Kósa expressed his desire of seeing Debrecen playing against Barcelona, while Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was happy to dispel the concerns Debrecen citizens regarding the stadium.
Though Orbán was not welcomed last year when Debrecen's Loki won the Hungarian Championship, at the inauguration he received a loud welcoming ovation. Orbán started his speech by saying that “this is how we imagine the future; creations like this make Hungary great. “ He then added that “the word ‘stadium’ was the unit of distance in Ancient Greece, thus we can say that we are one stadium closer to the world.”
Following Orbán’s speech music and sport gained ground as part of the opening ceremony. The first serious match on the grass of the new stadium takes place on 10 May when Loki is hosting Újpest for a match important in connection with the Hungarian Championship.
