Opposition demands Socialists withdraw confidence from PM
Opposition parties Fidesz and Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) on Monday asked the main governing Hungarian Socialist Party (MSzP) to withdraw its confidence from Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. The demand came after the leak of a tape recording of a closed session of the Socialist party in May in which Gyurcsány told party members that the government must reform and stop lying about the economy.
Earlier today the MSzP voiced support for the prime minister, while chairman of junior governing party Alliance of Free Democrats (SzDSz) Gábor Kuncze said the row over Gyurcsány's leaked speech will not affect the functioning of the coalition
Meanwhile, some 300-400 demonstrators demanding the resignation Gyurcsány were gathered in front of Parliament on Kossuth tér mid-morning on Monday, down from around 3,000 people who started rallying Sunday evening. No political party or organization had as yet become directly involved, according to reports.
